"My daughter's father has a drug addiction, and he keeps lying, stealing and abandoning us when I give him money. What does God want me to do? Be patient? Let him go? Be nice to him? Turn him away? If I turn him away, I feel that I'm letting my daughter down, because her father loves her, but he can't break free. He is hurting us over and over, and I can't seem to break the cycle. What is the right thing to do?"
The right thing to do is to help him. But not with money, that is not help. He will buy drugs, and that is hurting him. As long as he can buy them, he will be a drug addict. And don’t tolerate him stealing from you, either. That is the same as giving him money. If he is hungry, feed him. If he needs a place to sleep, give him a bed to sleep in. But no money, and nothing that he could convert into money. I cannot emphasize this too much. It is absolutely imperative. You must know that drug addicts will lie, steal, cheat, kidnap, and even kill for their drugs. Be very careful. Family means nothing. Drugs mean everything. If he is ever going to be anything but a hurting, mindless addict, he must want to get clean. He must want it. Not you, him. He may tell you that he wants to, but that is just a lie unless he checks in to a drug re-hab program. You must find him one in your town. Any health facility or hospital will tell you where they are and all about them. He must go. Not just tell you he will, if he says he will but doesn’t go RIGHT NOW, then it is all another lie. You should take him, if you drive. Don’t yell at him, don’t even try to reason with him. It won’t work. Show him that you love him by keeping everything out of his hands that he could use to get drugs. This will cause him pain, in withdrawal, but it is pain of his own choosing, and at this point there is no alternative. Be extremely firm and unyielding on this. He will use every trick in the book to get enough money out of you for “just one more fix.” Don’t be fooled. There will always be just one more, until he is dead. Keep talking to God about this. You will need his help. Ask for wisdom and strength, so that you can be a real help to this man. ![]() Cope With Death | Evolution and Ideas | Being a Christian | Why Is There Suffering? | Who Is In Hell? | | Return Home | The Meaning of Life | Is There a God? | Prayer | Teachings of Christ | Don Camillo Stories | Our Catholic Faith | Links | |
